Senior Principal Software Engineer - OpenJDK

Job Description

As a Senior Principal Software Engineer, you will also work closely with other teams in Red Hat like the OpenShift team and with existing customers and partners to better assess, identify, and resolve issues related to the JVM and the Garbage Collectors, including performance related problems and suggestions on best practices, contribute and help maintaining the JDK Flight Recorder codebase and its events, and finally continue maintaining the Shenandoah GC. Successful applicants must reside in a country where Red Hat is registered to do business. What you will do
• Contribute to the general upstream OpenJDK development, including bug fixes, new features, and helping others in the community with reviews and approvals
• Work on Project Lilliput and and Project Leyden research modernization of Java in Cloud environment and resource constrained scenarios
• Help improve Garbage Collection in OpenJDK and GraalVM
• Help with changes and fixes to JDK Flight Recording, including addition of JFR events
• Write blogs and articles, and generally present at conferences
• Help with backports and with OpenJDK releases both upstream and with the Red Hat builds of OpenJDK
What you will bring
• Deep understanding of the internals of the JVM, including the JVM memory model and the JVM memory management
• Deep understanding of the Hotspot JVM codebase
• Excellent understanding of the Java class library and the implications of new JVM language features like Project Loom and Valhalla
• 10+ years of experience in C++ and Java
• Ability to work with and communicate effectively in English with peers distributed over various geolocations and in a fast moving environment
The following are considered a plus:
• Experience with porting the JVM runtime to different platforms
• Experience with AArch64 or RISC-V architectures
• Experience with runtime monitoring and observability
• Previous contributions to the OpenJDK project with Committer role or above to at least one the OpenJDK updates repositories
