Job Description

This cross-functional team creates systems for sourcing, delivering, and analyzing data for IBMs next generation Cloud. We design and develop platforms and applications that target improvements in efficiency, reliability and effectiveness of IBM Cloud VPC data collection, delivery and analytics. Our broad focus spans IBM cloud-based service and infrastructure development and involves active collaboration with IBM Cloud tribes building computing, networking, and storage systems. We work with operations, telemetry, SRE and development teams.Your primary responsibilities will be operational: you will build and operate Linux-based clusters and maintain the availability and security of those systems. You will help deliver the custom software that these clusters host. You will also ensure proper system operation and support it during critical conditions.When not engaged in active maintenance of systems (which you shall work to minimize), you shall automate operational and auditing tasks. You will help implement compliance controls on systems you manage. If interested in analytics, service development, or infrastructure software development, opportunities to contribute to the team s greater missions will be afforded to you.Applicants with experience operating data centers, writing software to automate the operation of dynamic and high-scale infrastructures, and designing and implementing non-trivial networks of Linux systems are preferred. Exceptional candidates will have designed and operated large scale Unix system deployments and are capable of deep troubleshooting of infrastructure networking and systems issues. Required technical and professional expertise:Required Technical and Professional ExpertiseBachelors degree in computer science/eng. or related field At least 2 years of experience in Linux-based system administration Proficiency automating systems tasks in Bash and Python; use of Git Demonstrable experience in code organization, packaging, integration testing, versioning, and distribution Experience writing programs in either object-oriented or functional paradigms Experience using (or building!) Continuous Integration and automated software delivery tools Proficiency with both cloud services and personally-hosted, networked Linux baremetal, virtualization (preferably KVM), and container systems Understanding of Linux networking and OSI networking abstractions Experience hardening Linux systems and infrastructure networksPreferred Technical and Professional Expertise Experience with Linux kernel configuration, initramfs configuration and other early-boot concerns in Unix systems Experience with Linux userspace customization and process management Experience with x86 System hardware and x86 service management facilities like IPMI and BMC Deep experience with Linux distributions (RedHat, Debian, and Ubuntu preferred) and relevant clustered Linux management tools (RH Satellite server, RHSM, RH Certificate System, etc.) Experience with large-scale networks Experience with monitoring systems (open and closed-source) such as Zabbix, Sysdig, New Relic Open source contributor (personal website, committer to key publicly available open source codebases)About Business UnitDigitization is accelerating the ongoing evolution of business, and clouds - public, private, and hybrid - enable companies to extend their existing infrastructure and integrate across systems.
