Job Description

  • Manage a team of 3 5 Publishing Content Specialists to meet targets, quality requirements and expected behaviour to contribute to overall Publishing Content Department objectives
  • Oversee the effective implementation of workflows and procedures for all special content products
  • Provide organizational context and updates to team
  • Conduct regular meetings with team and direct reports
  • Perform annual PDP cycle for each team member
  • Monitor the performance of direct reports on PDP objectives and action plans; identify potential pitfalls in advance and establish corrective actions as and when necessary.
  • Develop direct reports according to the development action plan; identify and provide coaching and relevant trainings
  • Regularly liaise with and report to publishing units on portfolio specific issues; maintain the cooperative relationship with publishing by participating in publishing unit meetings and providing input as requested
  • Develop strong relationships between team and publishers, journal managers and other stakeholders
Drive growth of the assigned journal portfolio by growing quantity and quality of special content in line with portfolio strategy (10%)
  • Analyse opportunities for growth of special content in journal portfolio
  • Translate portfolio special content targets for acquisition, publication and bulk revenue into targets per journal
  • Identify topics for special content in line with publishing portfolio strategy
  • Identify potential guest editors for special content in line with publishing portfolio strategy
  • Create actionable acquisition, publication and bulk sales plans in line with targets
Support development of the assigned journal portfolio by developing and sharing knowledge about the local scientific community and by acquiring local content (10%)
  • Carry out and share desk research on regional hot topics and active researchers
  • Carry out and share desk research on conferences relevant for the assigned portfolio
  • Attend local conferences and build networks with the regional scientific community
  • Seek opportunities for local review papers, special issues, conferences, procedia and journals
  • Organise and lead, in collaboration with publisher, author and reviewer workshops
  • Advertise Calls for Papers and other promotional materials related to content acquisition on local scientific forums and social media
Acquire, develop and project manage high quality topical and special issues and related bulk revenue according to targets (10%)
  • Execute on acquisition, publication and bulk sales plans
  • Suggest sensible topics for special issues by surveying editorial board members, researching Scopus, researching competing journals, researching community and society websites, researching conference programs, participating in editorial board meetings and promoting the special issue program
  • Identify potential guest editors for accepted special issue ideas
  • Pro-actively bring new special ideas forward into proposals for approval by the journal editors ensuring special issue acquisition targets are met
  • If required, carry out quality assessment for suggested special issues and advise the editor on suitability of the proposal
  • Monitor special content quality by tracking citations and downloads in comparison with regular content in publishing portfolio
  • Feedback quality reports to publisher, editors and guest editors as indicators of success and input for further portfolio strategy planning
  • Participate in editorial board meetings from time to time
  • Take full ownership and manage the publication process for special issues by tracking progress, guiding and chasing guest editors and authors, anticipating potential barriers and solving issues
  • Ensure all special issues are published in time and in accordance to publication schedules and targets
  • Actively manage special issue publication budget towards year end
  • Negotiate bulk deal agreements for special issues
  • Generate leads for special issue bulk deals
  • Sell and upsell bulk deals for special issues
  • Ensure all bulk deals are delivered in time and are financially realized in accordance to commercial bulk revenue budgets
Develop and maintain relations with editors, (potential) guest editors and authors as well as internal stakeholders (10%)
  • Maintain excellent communications with journal editors, guest editors and authors
  • Establish productive collaboration with publishers
  • Act as single-point of contact for special content on all non-
  • production related matters for all stakeholders, internally and
  • externally
Provide process guidance and timely status information to all stakeholders for all special issues and review articles in the assigned portfolio from idea to production stages (10%)
  • Liaise with guest editors and review authors to confirm topic coverage, formats, and timelines, once the special issue / review proposal is accepted by publisher and editors
  • Generate special issue contracts and get these signed and stored
  • Send out thank you notes to guest editors and authors upon project completion
  • Set up EES system for special content
  • Maintain the pipeline of special issues and invited review articles by timely and accurately recording progress in SID/JCI
  • Liaise with journal managers and local supplier managers for production and dispatch matters
  • Oversee invoicing of bulk deals
