Boiler operators operate, repair, maintain, and adjust boilers, turbines, pumps, compressors, water lines, steam lines, valves, and all related systems and equipment. Boiler operators work in industrial environments such as factories, power plants, warehouses, and in the equipment rooms of large buildings that run on boiler systems. People in this career work all shifts, including nights and weekends, and report directly to floor supervisors or managers. Boiler operators work within boiler rooms and equipment rooms and rarely travel in the course of their day-to-day duties.Boiler operators perform a range of tasks involved in day-to-day operation and maintenance of boilers. They ensure appropriate fuel delivery to keep the boiler working. Operators devote significant time to monitoring meters and gauges to maintain fuel, chemical and water levels, adjusting the levels as necessary.Boiler operators must perform routine maintenance on the equipment and systems in a facility as part of their job. They will use hand or power tools when performing tasks like replacing defective valves, filters, or steam gauges on a heating system. Corrosive deposits can damage a boiler system, so operators test the boiler water and balance it with chemicals, if needed. Keeping safety at the forefront, boiler operators will watch the system during operation and attend to any additional problems. Once all is in working order, they will record their service data in logs. Boiler Operator Duties and ResponsibilitiesMonitor and Maintain BoilersBoiler operators perform frequent inspection checks and regular maintenance on boiler systems and related valves, gauges, piping, and other equipment.Inspect FluidsBoiler operators constantly inspect water, gas, and other fluid levels inside boilers and related equipment, making adjustments to fluids as necessary to keep systems operating at peak levels.Repair Boiler MachineryBoiler operators repair piping, valves, and other boiler machinery as needed.Replace Boiler PartsBoiler operators replace defective valves, gauges, and other boiler parts as needed.Record Daily ReadingsBoiler operators record daily gas readings, feed water tests, and other test results.Adjust EquipmentBoiler operators adjust valves and boiler controls as needed to control the amount of pressure in the system and keep the boiler system functioning safely.Maintain CleanlinessBoiler operators keep all boiler rooms, related facilities, and work areas clean and organized at all times.
