Job Description

JOB DESCRIPTION: Instrument TechnicianInstrument Technicians are highly skilled technologists. The great news is you can start working in this role with a high school diploma.As an Instrument Technician, youll consult manufacturers manuals to determine test and maintenance tasks. You will also use testing devices to inspect and test instruments and system operations and diagnose problems. This job also involves installing and maintaining instruments on new or existing plant equipment and processes.Instrumentation Technicians work with a wide variety of devices to measure and control pressure, flow, temperature, level, motion, force, and chemical make up. You will get to work with Engineers on basic design and sometimes consult with and advise Process Technicians. In this role, you will perform risk assessments. Part of your job will also be to repair, maintain and adjust system components or replace defective parts.Instrument Technician Duties and Responsibilities

  • Monitor various mechanical systems as they are in operation to ensure efficient and safe use
  • Maintain strict maintenance schedules for critical systems, logging all repairs and inspections
  • Quickly identify non-operative and malfunctioning systems before damage can occur
  • Troubleshoot test failures to determine root causes and develop processes to avoid repeat failure
    • The instrument technicians have to know to make and repair the modern equipment used by professionals
    • They have to specialize in certain type of equipment for a particular field and should know everything about it
    • They have to repair the equipment on time and should posses spare parts with them
    • They need to know about all the modern equipment that are used in their field of expertise
    • They have to contact spare part suppliers as this increases their profit margin and reduces the cost to the customer
    • They should build good relations with all the customers as it is good for the business
    The instrument technicians make good money. Their profession is in demand as almost everyone today uses instruments in their workplace. The education required by them is also not that high but they have to be good at knowing a machines system.
Instrument Technician Requirements and Qualifications
  • Associate degree in instrumentation technology or related field; bachelors degree preferred
  • Prior experience in a heavy manufacturing environment, especially in roles related to systems repair and troubleshooting
  • Excellent problem-solving and math skills
  • Experience with complex mechanical, pneumatic, and computerized systems
  • One has to obtain course completion certificate in the field in which they want to get specialization
  • Then they have to train as an assistant under a professional technician

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Follow plant policies and repair procedures
  • Calibrate, troubleshoot, repair and replace process instruments as a part of the plants maintenance program
  • Maintain process instruments including valves, vibration monitors and other instruments
  • Perform required environmental compliance testing and documentation
  • Reduce cost of repairing equipment while maintaining or increasing the quality of repairs
  • Work closely with plant operations to evaluate both routine and emergency instrument work
  • Wear proper safety equipment in appropriate areas
  • Be able to move in and around process equipment and confined spaces
