Job Description

Position Objective:To use a variety of research and investigative methods to conduct field investigations in PETA s focus areas including the use of animals for food, for clothing, for experimentation, for entertainment, in the pet trade and for labour as well as investigations into environmental and human health hazards related to these issues.Reports To: Chief Executive OfficerLocation: Delhi/ Mumbai/ RemotelyTerm of Employment:Full-timePrimary Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Prepare fact sheets on various animal protection issues
  • Conduct research as requested to help advance PETA s campaigns
  • Conduct assigned short- and long-term investigations including undercover investigations from beginning to end, including the following duties:
  • Research and interpret a variety of animal protection laws and issues in order to thoroughly prepare for investigations
  • Travel to and temporarily stay on location for various assignments for as long as necessary (including for several weeks or months at a time, if required)
  • Visit various industries that use animals as an animal welfare officer, as a PETA representative, as a member of the public or in some other capacity, as required
  • Work to obtain a voluntary position, an internship or employment in various industries that use animals, if required
  • Obtain and inspect relevant documents and paperwork from government offices, businesses and industries during investigations, as required
  • Work with trusted contacts during investigations and ensure that confidentiality is maintained at all times
  • Submit daily log notes in a detailed and orderly fashion
  • Use photography and videography to document conditions and use of animals as well as illegal, cruel and improper conduct
  • View and transcribe videos and select scenes for use in video edits
  • Log photos and videos
  • Behave legally and professionally and bring issues to the chief executive officer s attention
  • Develop documented cases
  • Draft complaints
  • Analyse research and technical papers
  • Prepare reports and videos on investigations
  • Perform a variety of tasks to prepare for the public release of investigations
  • Work with approved lawyers, as required, to assess evidence for violations of laws and regulations
  • Work with experts, as required, to assess investigation findings
  • Cooperate fully in criminal, civil and regulatory/administrative proceedings that result from investigations
  • Where necessary to have a trusted volunteer or contractor do the investigation for PETA because of his or her credentials, language skills or other reason, recruit and work closely with that person, ensuring necessary detail is included in his or her work and confidentiality is maintained
  • Maintain strict confidentiality at all times
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor
Qualifications:
  • Investigative journalism or other appropriate experience in a related field or relevant experience
  • Basic veterinary knowledge or experience a plus
  • Experience as an Honorary Animal Welfare Officer as recognized by the Animal Welfare Board of India a plus
  • Experience with audio-visual equipment
  • Thorough knowledge of Indian animal protection laws
  • Thorough knowledge of animal rights issues and PETA campaigns
  • Fluency in English and Hindi
  • Fluency in other Indian languages a plus
  • Proven ability to conduct in-depth research using a variety of means
  • Proven exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Diligent attention to detail and the ability to handle extreme stress
  • Willingness and ability to follow instructions carefully
  • Proven excellent organizational skills and the ability to handle many issues simultaneously
  • Ability to make sound judgments and to work independently in stressful environments
  • Proven ability to maintain confidentiality and use discretion at all times
  • Willingness and ability to travel and be away from home, including for months at a time, if required Commitment to the objectives of the organization
